Violet McWilliam (Sullivan) KennedyOctober 18, 1942 ~ September 19, 2017 (age 74)
Violet McWilliam Kennedy passed peacefully at Georgian Bay General Hospital on September 19, 2017 with family by her side. Violet was born in Glasgow, Scotland on Oct 18, 1942 to Violet Gallie McWilliam and Francis Fulton Sullivan. This wee lassie began life as the little princess. Violet was the youngest child, with 5 older brothers, Tommy, Frank, Robert, Alex and James.
As a young girl, Violet crossed Tollcross Park every day to attend school. She grew up on Maukinfauld Road in Glasgow. Vi started her working life as a clerk at William Collins Publishing in Glasgow until the age of 21, when she emigrated to Canada. Violet found work quickly at an insurance company in Toronto.
About this time, Don was managing a Power Supermarket and as luck would have it, Violet was boarding in the home of his head cashier. Vi went to the store often and would happen to run into Don. Eventually, he found the nerve to ask her out and the rest is history. Vi and Don were married at St Hugh of Lincoln Church in Malton on October 4, 1969. Vi was immediately promoted to manager of the family; a position she would hold forever.
Vi and Don’s greatest project was preparation for son Jason’s arrival in 1974. Jason would continue to be the focus of the family, with his parents’ support at his school in parents’ council, at t-ball and at kids’ social events. The Kennedy household would become the social hub of Jason’s friends and his parents were always willing to provide shelter to other kids in need.
When the Kennedys moved to Midland over 35 years ago, Vi started working at Red Cross, something that fit her helping nature. She retired from Red Cross in 2001, but never stopped working.
Service was always a huge part of Violet’s life in Midland. She belonged to the Lioness Club, Eastern Star and after retirement, volunteered at Community Living Huronia and Askennonia Senior Centre. Vi sat proudly in every executive position at Askennonia for over 15 years, from 2001 to 2017.
Vi leaves her beloved husband, Don, her loving son Jason and his beautiful wife Elena and their dear son Liev. Memories of Violet will always warm the heart of her niece, Maureen Sullivan Hannan and husband Scott and Kiera and Lewis, who deeply loved their Nanna. Vi was happy to have visited with plenty of family and friends before her passing. She was a friend to so many.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Brooklea Golf & Country Club, 8567 Highway #93, Midland on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 12:30 until 3 pm. The tribute will take place at 1 pm. This would have been Violet’s 75th birthday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Askennonia Senior Centre, the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to LeClair Cremation Centre.
