It is with tremendous sorrow we announce the sudden tragic passing of Gerald (Garry) Edmund Schinkel, son of Bernard and Olga (Arndt) Schinkel.
Born in Dafoe Saskatchewan, his family moved to St. Catharines in 1943 for a better life. At 16 he got a job at General Motors, to help his widowed mother, and worked there until 1960. After a year of unemployment he was hired by the new Ford Glass Plant in Niagara Falls, and worked there until 1992, when the plant moved to Mexico. He then took retirement. As a young man he was a skilled billiard player, and enjoyed 10-pin bowling. Eventually he became a skilled 10-pin bowler, and took time to teach other players. Patience was his middle name.
When he retired he left St. Catharines, to go to Muskoka and his beloved Gibson Lake, where he and his wife Colleen Betty (nee McCormack), who he was married to for almost 60 years, took their little cottage and turned it into their home, building it primarily on his own.
He leaves behind his 3 children, Terri Ann Magee (Robert), Donna Leigh Schinkel and her partner Nigel Henderson, Robert Gerald, and his partner Cathy Leech. He adored his grandchildren, and was so proud of their accomplishments, Dr. Kara Jennifer Catharine Magee of Madison, Wisconsin. Bobbi Sara Colleen Magee, London, Ontario, and Harry Gerald Henderson of Scarborough, Ontario.
He was known by all his family members as a quiet, gentle, generous man who would stop whatever he was doing to listen to all, whether it was an adult or a child, rarely advising, but letting them talk it out, or to lend a helping hand. He was a great listener and a kindhearted man. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Lock 3 Museum Hall, 1932 Welland Canals Parkway, St. Catharines on Saturday, December 7th from 1-4. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ontario Diabetes Association, or OVC Pet Trust.
